Selective Color & High ISO Exposure

This was taken at the Javi show Thursday the 24th at the St. Louis Botanical Garden. I did the selective coloring the same way as previous photos. In my opinion, the original photo had too much distracting greenery that took emphasis from the subject. This is a great tool, along with cropping, to enhance a mediocre image. Here is the original.

The thing that made all my shots at this show a bit better was a lesson I learned a few days before the show. I had read that you should always shoot 1/2 stop under exposed when taking RAW images to make sure that you don't blow out the highlights.. What I found out is that there is an exception to the rule! If you shoot high ISO (800-3200) underexposed even by little, you get twice the amount of sensor noise! All this time I have been underexposing my low light pictures and using GIMP plugins to remove as much of the noise as possible. This show proved it out. I shot almost exclusively at ISO 1600 fully exposed and the images were very acceptable even without processing.
