I have read in several photography articles that "light and composition is everything". I am starting to agree. After browsing flickr and seeing some of the most everyday objects as the subject of incredibly artistic images, I decided that I should stop looking for the perfect subject, and starting focusing on how I look at the things around me. Here are a couple of my first attempts.

For both of these shots I used a couple of the techniques I use for shooting portraits. 1) I made sure that the light source (morning sunlight) was over my left shoulder at about a 45 degree angle from my line to the subject. 2) I put the focal point in one of the 1/3rd intersections.
I think I am starting to understand what they mean.
