Well I finally broke down and bought a long lens. I think what cinched it was my experience with the coyote. I did get one shot with the Sigma 200 but it was far short and blurry from camera shake. After reading nearly every review on earth about EOS mount lenses in the 70-300 range, I came to the conclusion that the Canon had the best bang for the buck. It also happened that this lens had IS (Image Stabilization). My previous experience with IS on a rental lens was not that good so I wasn't sure I would even use it.
After the unboxing, the first thing I did was a quick test of the IS. The test I did convinced me that IS is AMAZING! The rental lens I had must have not been functioning correctly because this lens was a totally different experience!
Here are crops of the test I did. The first image was taken hand held at 300 mm at a shutter speed of 1/20th. (Yes I did say 1/20th at 300mm). I shot four images and this one was the best.

This next one was shot exactly the same way with the exception that I had the IS turned on and I only took one shot.

There was no processing done to these images other than cropping and conversion to JPG.
Something I noticed using this lens that I didn't notice on the rental (a 70-200 f/2.8L IS) was the way the image in the viewfinder would effectively freeze when half pushing the shutter release. The rental would make a whining sound but I never experienced this effect. I can't wait to get out and capture some wildlife images!!!
