I shot these hand held with my 70-300 in the backyard. My goal was to find some interesting light from the setting sun. I used the old photographers trick of squinting hard to remove detail and increase contrast while scanning my environment. This trick allows you to see only the light and dark. Notice the way the natural dark background becomes a backdrop with the spotlight squarely on the subject. The deep shadows really make these images pop. It is amazing how angle and quality of light can make something you pass by every day look so fascinating. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for sunlight! Hopefully I will be able to get out tomorrow night to make a similar image on the tripod. Without camera shake the detail will increase and I will be able to decrease the aperture increasing depth depth of field a bit. Once I get a higher quality image, I think either of these would be great in B&W.

I am starting to SEE THE LIGHT!
