To find out what it is that draws me into certain B&W images I decided to do some research on flickr. In looking through 500 or so I came to the conclusion it is the drama of hard light especially when it hits the subject at an angle where a lot of details are exposed and hard shadows are created. This type of light really forces me to see the shapes and textures in the subject that might have been lost to my eye if presented in color. I am not saying that this is the case for everyone but it is the way I see it. The image above is my first attempt at purposefully lighting a subject with the intent of making the type of B&W that I describe above.
To get the strong hard light required I used my Sunpak 333 manual flash connected to a wireless trigger placed at about a 90 degree angle from the camera to the left of the subject. The experiment went exactly as I expected. The only thing I hate about this image is the distracting speaker that I couldn't find a way to avoid.
