This is a new technique I learned from the Strobist blog. You set the camera up to get the correct exposure of the background and light your subject with a soft light. In this case I used a shoot through umbrella as my main light and a white reflector as the fill. The flash was set so that the subject got the illumination required without overwhelming the environment. This was taken hand held at 1/10th of a second ISO 200 at f/4.5. Yes I did say 1/10th of a second and there is no camera shake blur! This works because subject is dark without the flash so once the flash fires at a 250th of a second, the subject is burned into the sensor making any movement there after irrelevant.
This technique can also be used outdoors in twilight or just before sunset as long as you have enough flash power to match the sun's light or what is left of it.
For a long time I have fought using a flash because the only flash I had used was on camera or in technical terms "on axis". Now that I have a remote trigger for my Sunpak 333 and can move it off camera, the possibilities are endless!!!
BTW --- Sorry for the long pause in posts. I have not stopped taking pictures as you will already know if you have been checking my flickr account. I just lost my motivation for writing for a while. I will be posting more often....... (and catching up with some of my adventures from summer....)
