I could have taken a closeup shot of this turtle detail but I don't think it would have had nearly the impact. Although it is an interesting design, the fact that it is attached to a bridge spanning a frozen inlet of a lake adds to it's appeal. I also liked the way that the blue gray sky added some contrast to the color of the subject. I think the same thing holds true for portraits. If you can put your subject in an environment that they are familiar with and comfortable in, more of their personality comes through. If some of the environment is visible and recognisable to the viewer it gives them that much more information on the subject.
